From Dr. Gross

If You’re Considering a Skin-Resurfacing Treatment…

Dermabrasion can help to “refinish” the skin’s top layers through a method of controlled surgical sanding. The treatments soften the sharp edges of surface irregularities, giving the skin a smoother appearance.

Dermabrasion is most often used to improve the look of facial skin left scarred by accidents or previous surgery, to smooth out acne pits and scars of the face, or deep lines around the mouth. It’s also sometimes used to remove the pre-cancerous growths called keratoses.

“Dermabrasion remains a powerful tool for improving depressed acne scars in patients with moderate to severe acne scarring. Deep acne scars and chicken pox scars of the face are the main indications for dermabrasion”, according to Dr. Gross. Two to three sessions are generally required under anesthesia with a one-week recovery time to allow for the pink areas to heal properly. Following this treatment Dr. Gross may also recommend either Pulsed Dye laser or Erbium laser to improve your overall results. Although patients want immediate results from treatment, it is well established that six months are required for stimulation of collagen and deposition of new skin cells. Also, the concept of multiple treatments and combination therapy is critical for patient success. As with any resurfacing procedure, strict attention to wound care and avoiding sun is critical to your success.
