Orlando Plastic Surgery Restylane Logo 1 Restylane® – From Dr. GrossRestylane® is a new generation of what is known as filler products, substances used to correct facial lines and folds and to plump and reshape the lips, as well as for softening lower eyelid bags. There are two important characteristics of this product over similar products that have previously been found in the marketplace. It is composed of hyaluronic acid, a substance that exists naturally in the body, making it safe and completely biodegradable. “The additional difference is that the effects are more long lasting, usually 6-9 months,” says Dr. Gross.

Restylane® is used to restore, fill, and eradicate lines on the face. A good example of its use is in the correction of lines that extend from the nose downward toward the mouth, which tend to become more pronounced with age. It is also effective in restoring volume and shape to the lips, and at the same time softening lip lines. Dr. Gross bases treatment on an understanding of  facial aging and collagen loss. See below.

What are the visible effects of facial aging?
The visible effects of facial aging are the progressive changes you see when you look in the mirror — including loss of skin elasticity, sagging, forehead lines, frown lines, crow’s-feet, smile lines, lip lines, marionette lines (the lines framing your mouth), as well as changes to the color and texture of the skin and loss of volume.

  • When does facial aging begin?
Facial aging usually begins in your 20s when the firmness of your skin begins to decrease. Wrinkles, blemishes, and sunspots may also start to appear, becoming more pronounced with age. Of course, changes vary from person to person.
  • What factors contribute to facial aging?
Facial aging is caused by both internal and external factors. Internal (or chronological) factors happen over time and are caused by genetics and the natural aging process. External (or environmental) factors are things in the world around you, including sun exposure, smoking, pollution, gravity, facial expressions, and sleep position. All of these factors can contribute to changes in the skin, as well as changes in facial bones.
  • What is the role of collagen loss in facial aging?
Collagen is a fibrous protein in the dermis that gives structure to the skin and provides the foundation for the retention of elastin and hyaluronic acid. Elastin is an elastic protein that helps maintain shape, while hyaluronic acid cushions and lubricates to keep the skin moist. More collagen enables the presence of more elastin and hyaluronic acid.

With age and environmental damage, collagen is lost, and as time goes on, the body’s natural production decreases. The damage to the underlying structure of the skin reduces the skin’s ability to maintain elasticity and retain moisture.

Commonly Asked Questions

What is the difference between Restylane® and Botox®?
The two products have completely different actions. Botox® relaxes tiny facial muscles, causing lines in certain areas to diminish or disappear. Restylane® actually fills lines, restoring the natural contour of the face. It is not unusual for individuals to utilize both treatments to restore a youthful look to the face in a rather dramatic way.

Can I have an allergic reaction to Restylane®?
Restylane® is non animal based and therefore requires no skin testing. This eliminates any possibility of allergic reaction.

What are the side effects?
The only side effects that can occur are temporary redness and slight swelling at the site of injection. This disappears in a short period of time.

Will I feel any pain?
Restylane® is injected directly into the skin in tiny amounts with an ultra fine needle. A topical anesthetic may be used when injecting facial lines and folds. When used to enhance the lips, a local anesthetic, similar to that used by a dentist, is administered so that the procedure is pain free

How long do the effects of Restylane® last?
“The additional difference is that the effects are more long lasting, usually 6-9 months,” says Dr. Gross.
