From Dr. Gross

Myth:  Only women have cosmetic surgery

False.  Men comprise about 16% of patients seeking cosmetic surgery across North America, and this number continues to rise, according to Dr. Gross.

The trend in cosmetic therapy continues to show more and more male patients seeking cosmetic facial improvement and anti-aging solutions. It has become more acceptable in our society for  men to seek out anti-aging remedies and facial plastic surgery. “In an ever-competitive market place, looking and feeling your best is important and men of all ages are embracing it, ” says Dr. Gross.  Our practice sees and  treats men of all ages for a variety of skin conditions and cosmetic treatments.

For many men, the decision to see a facial plastic surgeon begins with a few lines between the eyebrows and across the forehead. This is typically the time when men seek Botox treatment or Juvederm. Others seek help when drooping upper eyelids, eyebrows,  or baggy lower eyelids become noticeable. A very common consultation for men is for the procedure called blepharoplasty or eyelid lift.  Men may also seek Rhinoplasty  (nose surgery) to remove a hump on the nose profile or straighten a crooked nose from a sports injury.  Other indications for men are  Acne scars,  Lliposuction under the chin and neck, and ear pinning for protruding ears.   Men also are interested in neck lift and face lift to gain a more youthful neckline and tighten a sagging face and jawline. Ear pinning or Otoplasty has become more prevalent as hairstyles have gotten shorter- making it difficult to cover protruding ears.

Another emerging trend is for non surgical therapy to improve the skin tone, texture, reduce frown lines, and fill depressions around the mouth.  ”Men are getting Botox, Fraxel Laser, Pulse Dye Laser, Restylane/ Sculptra/ Juvederm treatments in greater numbers every year”, according to Dr. Gross.  Looking your best and taking care of your face is just as important to men, he adds.

Our practice takes an active role in treating men, erasing signs of aging, re-shaping the profile, and doing it with a Natural look.  Our facility is gender-neutral with Tuscan architecture,  earth tone colors, plenty of magazines for Men, and a staff geared toward making your visit comfortable, quick, and easy.  You will also see a portion of our website dedicated to Surgery for Men- affectionately  known as ‘the Mens Room’.

“I wanted to look as good as I felt,” said a retired educator, 53. “My face didn’t show how much energy I really had.”

So, after months of research, he got a little help for his sagging eyelids from a plastic surgeon. And he looks younger. Even his friends say so.

Orlando/Lake Mary-  Forget droopy eyes. Bid farewell to those telltale wrinkles. And say sayonara to turkey neck. A small but growing group of middle-aged men are going under the knife to hold back the relentless march of time. They’re also getting Botox injections, soft tissue fillers and chemical peels in pursuit of a youthful look.

Procedures for men grew by 2 percent in 2010, led mostly by baby boomers — those born between 1946 and 1964 — who are getting more comfortable with the idea that a little cosmetic help can go a long way. It’s the first uptick since 2007, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, who say the change also signals that people are growing more comfortable spending money on themselves after the recession.

Between 2007 and 2009, the number of male cosmetic procedures remained steady at 1.1 million. But last year, the number inched up to 1.2 million. And, of all plastic surgeries, the share of men’s procedures has grown more significantly — from 8 percent of the total in 2008 to 13 percent in 2010.

The biggest increase has been in minimally invasive procedures — Botox and soft tissue fillers, primarily, says Dr. Gross.

“It’s more acceptable,” says Ian, a 52 year old engineer, who had his eyelids tucked, his eyebrows raised and then a botox treatment  procedure for good measure. “My father would’ve never ever thought of doing this, but I definitely feel I made the right decision.”

Men of all ages are growing more comfortable with the idea of getting help for their looks, from special creams to injections or laser. Popular plastic surgery reality shows and affordable financing have also fueled the interest. Men see guys like themselves — not just celebrities or actors — improving their appearances on these shows and learn they can get the same results without taking too much time from work.

Alfredo  had surgery for the annoying bags under his eyes on a Friday and was back at work by midweek.

“If you feel sick, you take a medicine,” Alfredo, 50, explains. “If you work out, you take a supplement. This is pretty much the same.”

Local doctors say boomers are reaching an age where exercise may no longer be able to fight off gravity. Hence, in 2010, facelifts for men rose 14 percent and liposuction 7 percent nationally, according to that ASPS.

About 70 percent of our patients are men, most of them in their 30s, 40s and 50s. In the past year, we have seen a 20 to 25 percent increase in patients from the same time last year. “There’s pent up demand,” he adds. “I think there men are finally embracing the idea of looking good and taking care of their faces, ” says Dr. Gross.

In some cases, it is  job insecurity fueling interest in cosmetic surgery. It’s a tougher job market, so they want to look better and younger. They want to look less tired and more alert. They don’t want the drooping jowls or eyes.

On the other hand, ”many of our male  patients are successful businessmen who have accomplished a lot and don’t feel threatened by younger men in the work force. They’re pretty successful people and they don’t have to prove anything. They just want to look good,” says Dr. Gross.

Some men are prompted to visit the plastic surgeon for other reasons. Quite a few find themselves suddenly single and want to date again — usually younger women.

“That’s a big motivator. Having a more youthful look with Botox, Juvederm, or eyelid surgery  gives them a wider age range for dating,” according to Gross.

Men also tell surgeons they don’t want a drastic change in appearance, just enough to make them look better. For the most part, they don’t want to go from 60 to 30, they go for the subtle look. They want natural.

Commonly Asked Questions

Is plastic surgery common with men?
Yes, more than most people think. With society’s growing emphasis on health and keeping fit, it is only natural for men to want their facial appearance to reflect their physical vitality, energy and well-being. Facial plastic surgery for men has become much more commonplace in today’s world and men are choosing to have cosmetic surgery in increasing numbers. Often, men are looking for a career advantage as a side benefit to facial cosmetic enhancements. This decade finds men staying longer in the workforce, while every year a new group of graduates seek to begin their careers. A younger look can express an ability to compete against younger co-workers and help to provide a boost in self-confidence and esteem. A rejuvenated look can indicate a ‘can do’ attitude, while a tired or worried expression can give the wrong impression to business associates and prospective employers.

What are the main issues most men have?
An increasing number of men are interested in correcting facial imperfections or injuries from their childhood with cosmetic procedures. “Crow’s feet around the eyes, creases between the eyebrows, sagging chin, facial looseness, and a bump on the nose are common conditions men seek our help with”, according to Dr. Gross. Whereas many middle-aged men are looking for a more rested, assured, and youthful profile. They prefer to eliminate the signs of aging such as the frown lines on the forehead or the tired look of bags under the eyes.

Are there non- surgical options for men?
Yes. There an numerous affordable new alternatives to surgery for sun damaged skin, frown lines and wrinkles. Lasers, Dermal fillers, BOTOX, Dysport, and Restylane are commonly used to restore skin to a more youthful appearance, smooth out frown lines, eliminate forehead creases, refresh the eyes,  and reverse the presence of scars. These nonsurgical treatments can be done during a regular office visit and without interrupting a busy work schedule.

Do men have Facelifts / Minilifts and necklifts?
Yes.  Another concern for men is getting rid of ‘turkey waddle’ or the loose skin that hangs under the chin. This can be achieved with liposuction of the neck or in some cases a neck lift may provide the most dramatic improvement. The most common procedures Dr. Gross performs for men include: neck liposuction, eyelid surgery, nose surgery, chin implants, brow lifts and necklifts. “The male face presents special considerations when one is considering a cosmetic procedure,”  says Dr. Gross. Several significant factors include the richer blood supply and thicker skin of a man’s face, which can influence both healing and scarring. In addition, the pattern of hair growth for the beard, sideburns and forehead must also be carefully evaluated. As men and women become better educated about cosmetic surgery through the news media and television, they feel more comfortable with seeking medical advice on how to improve their appearance. Although women have led the way in seeking facial enhancements, there is no longer a stigma attached to men who are considering cosmetic treatments and cosmetic surgery. “Men now comprise ~ 25% of our practice and the number keeps growing” , says Dr. Gross.
