People opt to have reconstructive or reparative rhinoplasty for many different reasons. If your nose has been injured by trauma, the result can affect both the physical appearance of your nose and its ability to function properly. A rhinoplasty procedure at our Orlando plastic surgery center can correct these issues, providing you with improved appearance and a better quality of life.
What are the different types of nasal injuries?
Our rhinoplasty patients most commonly visit us for issues including:
- Broken bone or cartilage
- Restricted airway
- Blood clots
- Compound damage from repeated injury
Why should you consider a rhinoplasty?
There are a few very important reasons to consider surgery to correct a damaged nose. For example:
- After you break your nose, it can heal crookedly, forming a bump on the bridge. It is best to get your nose checked out by a board-certified plastic surgeon as soon as possible. If it heals asymmetrically, it may make corrective surgery more difficult.
- A restricted airway can lead to breathing issues, sinus troubles, sleeping issues, and more.
- If a blood clot settles into the septum and is left untreated, it can break down the cartilage, causing a collapse, which is also known as “saddle nose.”
How do I choose a plastic surgeon?
Choosing a skilled and qualified plastic surgeon is important for any procedure, but it is especially important when the procedure is performed on your face. First, make sure your plastic surgeon is board-certified and has years of experience performing rhinoplasties. Additionally, it is a good idea to check out real patient reviews and before-and-after photos. These will give you a better idea of your potential experience and results with a certain surgeon. Lastly, go with your gut. If you are not comfortable with your surgeon or have doubts about their skill or expertise, find someone else.
What is the process for getting a rhinoplasty here at Primera?
I perform about 100 rhinoplasties a year, which is nearly 10 times the average of a general plastic surgeon. During that time, I’ve learned that it can be difficult for patients to describe the final look they envision. That is why I use special computer imaging software to help patients see their potential results before their surgery. Seeing a representation of your own face can be much more useful than before-and-after photos of other people.
Once we have a better idea of your cosmetic goals, we will create a customized treatment plan and schedule your procedure. There are certain steps you must take to prep for surgery, including avoiding smoking, arranging for rides to and from surgery, and stocking up on any supplies you may need.
On the day of your surgery you will be put under general anesthesia, and depending on your specific needs, we will perform an open or closed rhinoplasty. A closed rhinoplasty is a procedure that produces no scarring. An open procedure gives the surgeon a better view of the surgical area but does produce minimal scarring. A rhinoplasty surgery takes about 2.5 hours to complete.
What happens after the procedure?
After a rhinoplasty, most patients can return to work in less than a week. The final outcome reveals itself several months to a year after surgery. Check out our photo gallery and read Shaunessy’s story for more information about the process of nose surgery.
